How To Install Pendant Lighting

TUTORIAL: INSTALL A LIGHT FIXTURE SUSPENDED FROM THE CEILING
Installing a hanging fixture on the ceiling is easier than you think. It is enough to equip yourself well, to take some precautions and to respect each step.

Before you start
Before installing a suspended pendant lamp, you must:

  • Cut the power, either by removing the fuse from the room, or by cutting the general power supply.
  • Check that the power is off by operating the room switches.
  • Remove the chandelier or suspension , if a light fixture was already in place.
  • Check whether the site is equipped with a hook or a peg, or a bar with holes for screws, and compare the compatibility of this installation with the fixing system supplied with your new chandelier.
  • If necessary, you will have to pierce your ceiling and install a hook or bar yourself.

Attachment placement

If your ceiling has no hook or bar, you must drill a hole near the electrical supply to fix a hook, which will hang your chandelier or your lampshade support . The pendant lamp has a wire cover, to be raised when the installation is finalized. But you can also hang a chandelier without a hook , if a fixing bar is provided.

  • Compare the width of the hole in the ceiling and the spacing of the screws in your fixing system.
  • If the hole in the ceiling is too wide, get a new metal bar of the right size.
  • Take the measurements and drill around the ceiling opening.

Connect the wires

After checking that the power is off, observe the wires coming out of the ceiling. You should see 3 wires: the ground wire is green and yellow, the neutral wire is blue, and the phase is brown or sometimes red. To connect these wires to those of your chandelier or your lampshade support, you must first strip them over a length of 1.5 cm. Then, just twist the electrical wires between them and place them each under a connection cap. You can also use a domino, a plastic part with screws that tighten and hold the electrical wires in contact position.

Turn the power and enjoy your new pendant lighting.
